BioSuiteVR: Accelerating Bioindustrial Training to Meet Workforce Development Demand
Members: GraspXR, XpeRience Science, and BioSciences Core Skills Institute
Project dates: 2024 - 2026
This project brought BioSuite Virtual, an immersive mixed-reality training platform, from concept to a fully developed training platform. With BioSuite Virtual, learners experience lab-scale fermentation workflow simulations, including hands-on assembling, operating, monitoring, and troubleshooting a bioreactor within a virtual lab environment.
The platform contains eleven instructional chapters, hands-on activities, integrated scenario-based training, knowledge checks, and a credentialing assessment developed with the Bioscience Core Skills Institute. Through this project, the system was deployed with academic and workforce training partners and reached over 500 users across nearly 100 institutions.
Currently, access to hands-on training for bioindustrial manufacturing facilities can be both challenging and expensive. Virtual and mixed reality platforms can provide an important bridge between classroom instruction and real bioprocess operations.
