Development of Biopesticide Life Cycle Analysis Resources

Members: Boundless Impact Research & Analytics, Invasive Species Corporation

Project dates: 2026 – present

This project will evaluate the operational performance of aquatic-based biopesticides to support innovation across the bioindustrial manufacturing network. This will address a persistent challenge in the bioeconomy: the lack of reliable, product-specific Key Performance Indicator (KPI) data needed to assess and improve efficiency in bio-based product development. This research will also provide insight into cost competitiveness, energy and water efficiency, and supply chain risk.

Through this project, researchers will create a comprehensive, ISO-compliant Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) report for a representative biopesticide, along with a first-of-its-kind Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) Data Gap Framework. The LCA and LCI will include critical data and tools to understand and reduce detrimental impacts throughout the bioproduct life cycle—from raw material sourcing to production and end use. It will assess performance metrics such as water use, cumulative energy demand, supply chain impacts, cost effectiveness, and living systems impact to identify opportunities for improvement in biopesticide design and manufacturing.

The project will also develop a practical framework to guide other bioindustrial manufacturers in navigating LCI data gaps. This framework will be broadly applicable to bioproducts at any stage of development and will be made available to BioMADE members.

By generating data-driven insights and reusable tools, this project empowers bioindustrial innovators to make smarter decisions, ultimately driving value. By developing resources that equip BioMADE members with science-based, data-driven performance information and tools that can increase their market competitiveness, reduce supply chain risk, improve natural resource efficiency, and enhance resilience, this project will help catalyze a culture of continuous improvement in the bioeconomy and enable members to communicate their value to customers, investors, and regulators with confidence.
