Greener Chemistry via Process Integration and Intensification at Pilot Scale

Member: Lygos

Project dates: 2024 – 2025

Lygos developed a cost-effective solution to produce Ecoteria, a bio-based malonate product platform that doesn’t rely on foreign petrochemicals or hazardous chemicals. Ecoteria is a useful building block and ingredient in a variety of applications, including agricultural chemicals, coatings, materials, pharmaceuticals, and personal care.

This project moved production from MRL5 to MRL6 by piloting a continuous operation system, integrating unit operations, and incorporating recycling systems. This ultimately resulted in increased process capacities, efficiencies, and yields, while also reducing toxic waste generation and raw material consumption.

The project was demonstrated in a representative pilot system and illustrates a scalable and economically viable process solution for continuous recovery of bio-based products from crude fermentation broth.
