Joint Integrated Modeling for Systematic Optimization of eNvironmental Impacts and Costs (JIMSONIC)
Member: Amyris
Project dates: 2023 - present
This project built JIMSONIC, the Joint Integrated Modeling for Systematic Optimization of eNvironmental Impacts and Costs. This toolkit, available to BioMADE members, can be used for predictive modeling or technologies at any stage of development. The toolkit includes:
Structured but flexible user inputs for Process Definition
A Scenario Analysis tool for modeling up to 16 discrete user-defined scenarios, with up to 16 variables
A Sensitivity Analysis tool leveraging Monte Carlo simulations to explore the impacts of any process variables of interest
Consolidation of process model inputs (e.g., raw materials and process utilities) necessary for LCA, and formatting that data in preparation for performing
The toolkit enables BioMADE members to conduct affordable and rapid techno-economic analyses (TEAs) and life cycle analyses (LCAs) from the early bench stage and onward. This is an important step when evaluating the financial and environmental feasibility of industrial bioprocesses.
Members can now rapidly perform more comprehensive cost modeling in order to inform decision-making when screening potential commercial opportunities, developing novel processes, optimizing existing processes, and more. Modelers can use pre-built unit operation models to simulate their process and the evaluate up to 16 potential scenarios at once in order to better prioritize process optimization efforts. This simple but flexible framework makes TEA and LCA work more affordable and approachable for BioMADE members, ultimately pushing more products to commercialization.
Members can access the toolkit here, which includes the Excel file, a user guide, and seven informational videos.
