Joint Integrated Modeling for Systematic Optimization of eNvironmental Impacts and Costs (JIMSONIC)

Member: Amyris

This project will build the next-generation standard for assessment of sustainable bioprocesses with JIMSONIC, the Joint Integrated Modeling for Systematic Optimization of eNvironmental Impacts and Costs. JIMSONIC can be used for predictive modeling and for intensification and optimization of technologies at any development stage. It will also provide LCA/TEA practitioners with a clear decision-making matrix for weighing costs with environmental and social impacts.

JIMSONIC will enable members of the BioMADE community to conduct affordable, rapid, and facile evaluation of process economics and sustainability from the early bench stage onward and provide a universalized decision-making matrix applicable at all manufacturing readiness stages and production scales.

Integration of Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) and technoeconomic analyses (TEAs) is an important step when evaluating the financial and environmental feasibility of industrial bioprocesses. Extensive adoption of LCA/TEA across process development stages is unrealized, largely due to the complexity of the analyses, a lack of a unified bioprocess specific Life Cycle Inventory (LCI), and uncertainty around the reliability of models. JIMSONIC will address these gaps with the goal of encouraging more widespread utilization of these assessments in the biotechnology sector.
