Five Years into Manufacturing the Future

Today marks five years since BioMADE was announced as the bioindustrial Manufacturing Innovation Institute by the Department of Defense in October 2020. From our inception, BioMADE has championed innovation, collaboration, and resilience, growing into a national network of over 300 members and delivering transformative impact across industry, academia, and government. Together with its members and government partners, BioMADE is building a resilient bioindustrial manufacturing ecosystem, commercializing innovative new products, advancing critical defense technologies, building the next generation workforce, and creating a national network of pilot plants.

Thank you to all of our incredible members who have partnered with BioMADE in our first five years! You are critical as we work together to drive this industry forward. We’re excited to share and celebrate the following highlights with you. Here’s to the next five years!

Highlights from BioMADE’s first five years:

  • Hosted over four thousand attendees from hundreds of different organizations at our events, including the Member Meeting and webinars:

    • Including our new Community Capabilities webinar series, which covers topics from AI-driven fermentation to dairy byproduct bioconversion and cybersecurity. Members can watch recordings here

    • Don’t miss out on the fun: join us in April for the 2026 Member Meeting!

  • Announced the first three sites in our national Pilot Plant Network in Minnesota, California, and Iowa. These sites will provide critically needed bioindustrial manufacturing infrastructure and accelerate commercialization of new bioproducts

    • Minnesota: A 122,000-sq-ft facility equipped with 25,000-liter fermenters, cutting edge downstream processing, and workforce training opportunities.

    • Iowa: A specialized 15,000-sq-ft facility dedicated to advancing agricultural bioproducts, bio-based chemicals, and food ingredients.

    • California: A versatile 25,000-sq-ft facility featuring 4,000-liter fermentation tanks and adaptable downstream capabilities.

  • Funded nearly 100 groundbreaking research projects valued at over two hundred million dollars.

    • These projects are unlocking the benefits of bioindustrial manufacturing for everyone from everyday consumers to farmers to warfighters by scaling up production of new products, bringing new products to market, reducing costs, and inventing new processes and equipment.

    • Members have filed patents on downstream processing separation techniques, improved cell culture performance and product recovery, new methods for purifying hydrophobic proteins, and more.

    • Through our education and workforce development program, BioMADE has provided opportunities for students, professionals, and members of the armed forces community to participate in courses related to bioindustrial manufacturing, bioreactor principles, bioprocess development, and career training.

  • Brought together over 325 members in 40 states across the U.S. working together on one common vision of advancing domestic bioindustrial manufacturing.
