BioMADE to Establish Bioindustrial Manufacturing Infrastructure in Minnesota
Following bipartisan support from Governor Walz and the Minnesota Legislature, the Minnesota site will be the first start in a national network of bioindustrial manufacturing facilities
MINNEAPOLIS-ST. PAUL, MN – June 13, 2023 – BioMADE will be investing in state-of-the-art bioindustrial manufacturing infrastructure in Minnesota, following support of up to $100 million from Governor Tim Walz and the Minnesota Legislature in the 2023 legislative session. The forthcoming biomanufacturing infrastructure investments in Minnesota will be the first start in a national network of critically needed pilot-scale biomanufacturing innovation facilities that will transform American manufacturing for the 21st century.

Bioindustrial manufacturing uses biology to convert agricultural feedstocks and waste streams to high-value chemicals, materials, and products that Americans use every day. Cement, fire-resistant materials, durable fibers, bioplastics, food products, and more can all be created through bioindustrial manufacturing.
The bipartisan support from state of Minnesota builds on federal investment and domestic biomanufacturing priorities established by Congress and the Biden administration. Congress included an initial investment of $300 million through the FY23 Consolidated Appropriations Act to support the first phase of a network of pilot-scale bioindustrial manufacturing infrastructure around the country. Starting with this Minnesota site, BioMADE and its partners will establish the U.S. as a leader in the burgeoning bioeconomy while also strengthening American competitiveness and retaining American research and development efforts. Additionally, in September 2022, President Biden signed Executive Order 14081, which was issued to provide a whole-of-government approach for building a sustainable, safe, and secure American bioeconomy.

Although there are countless American companies working on bioindustrial manufacturing innovations every day, the current lack of domestic infrastructure required to transition from the laboratory to commercial production results in American companies moving their manufacturing operations overseas. BioMADE’s multi-year effort to create a national network of domestic, pilot-scale infrastructure, and launch of the facility in Minnesota, will fundamentally transform American manufacturing and re-shore manufacturing jobs.
