Virtual Application Workshop: Combat Feeding Directorate

Members, join us on Monday, February 6, 2023 for the first in a series of virtual DoD Application Workshops from BioMADE. These Application Workshops will bring together BioMADE members and key government stakeholders to discuss pathways from industry to DoD, and help the DoD learn about market-ready biomanufactured products.

BioMADE’s first virtual Application Workshop will be with the Combat Feeding Division (CFD), which executes a joint-service program that supports Soldier lethality and resiliency by providing nutritious, palatable food that meets the Office of the Surgeon General’s nutrient standards. CFD partners with OGAs, industry, and academia to rapidly transition high-performance nutrition technology to the Joint Services and commercial food industry.

Representatives from the CFD will present about their needs and interests, requirements processes, pain points, and pathways to acquisition and procurement. Then, select members will have the opportunity to present privately to the CFD about their products. To ensure anonymity and for ease of travel, members will present remotely to the CFD.

The goals of this workshop are to educate BioMADE members working in the food sector on how to engage with the DoD, and to expose the CFD staff to the technical opportunities present in the BioMADE ecosystem. There are two ways to participate in this workshop:

Presentation from CFD Leadership

Led by Erin Gaffney-Stomberg, Chief of the Combat Feeding Division, this session will cover CFD needs and interests, requirements processes, pain points, pathways to acquisition and procurement, and more. This session will be held on Feb. 6 at 10:00 am ET / 7:00 am PT and is open to all BioMADE members.

Pitch to CFD Leadership

Following the presentation, CFD leadership will be hearing presentations from select BioMADE members who have ingredients of interest.

Please submit a brief description of the ingredient you’d like to present virtually to the Combat Feeding Division (CFD) by January 6, 2023. Submissions should be no more than 500 words. Submit a separate form if you have more than one ingredient or product.

The content submitted will only be reviewed by BioMADE and U.S. Government staff. Members will be notified of a decision the week of January 16, 2023.

Please contact govprojects@biomade.org with questions.

CFD Areas of Interest

CFD is interested in alternative protein sources to help support Soldier performance, improve recovery, and provide the highest quality nutrition that mitigates detrimental effects and aids in physiological recovery. Objectives of military rations include digestive health, cognitive health, anti-inflammation, skeletal health, immune health, and muscle recovery.

The following three areas are emphasized:

  1. Single macronutrient ingredients (protein, carbohydrates, fiber or lipids) that can be incorporated into shelf-stable ration components and are highly tailorable (i.e., tailored levels of essential amino acids (EAA)) produced via biosynthetic processing. Additionally, individual food commodities produced through novel technologies are of interest to support supply chain resiliency of commodities (i.e., flour, shortening/oil, sugar, and other staple ingredients).

  2. Complex ingredient products that contain multiple macronutrient and/or non-nutritive components produced via precision fermentation.

  3. Non-nutritive and/or functional ingredients, such as such as enzymes, probiotics, flavoring agents, and vitamins produced via precision fermentation. Non-nutritive ingredients would need to offer an added benefit such as improved stability.
